PR messaging: adapting during COVID-19 pandemic (July 2020)

As a 21-year-old from the suburbs of New York City, it is safe to say that I am used to handling a fast-paced lifestyle involving multi-tasking on a daily basis. Ever since I was a little girl, I have been obsessed with television – everything about it. I would come home from school every day, do my homework and watch E! News at 7:00pm to hear about all of the celebrity gossip. When that was over, I would watch my other favorite television shows that were scheduled to air that day. I have spent time on the set of CBS’s Everybody Loves Raymond throughout its nine seasons, and I’ve even been fortunate enough to even attend the Emmy Awards. It was no surprise to anyone when I went on to pursue internships in the television industry. I have completed demanding internships on television sets at prestigious corporations such as CBS [The Late Show With David Letterman], HBO [Robert Klein: Unfair & Unbalanced] and ABC-Disney [The Chew]. These incredible internships made me to truly understand what it means to be a part of something bigger than myself. However, last summer, when my internship at The Chew came to an end, I decided that I was it was time to see what else was out there. The public relations industry drew my attention.

At the time, I felt I was definitely set on pursuing a career in television but that there was no harm in learning about something else. Luckily, my aunt works at Marina Maher Communications in New York City, which is a large Public Relations firm in charge of accounts such as Covergirl, Head & Shoulders, and Loreal. She gave me my first glance at PR, allowing me to shadow her for a week. Throughout the week, I was able to sit in on calls with Target and Head & Shoulders, observe meetings about the Teen Spirit campaign against bullying and other administrative tasks. Additionally, I attended the Orla Kiely for Target launch party at the Orla Kiely store. The party was an eye-opening event. I was able to see the inner workings of an event. I remember looking around and seeing people who were really enjoying themselves. The designer herself was taking pictures with guests. Giveaways were handed out and tons of food and drinks were being served. I thought about how much I enjoy a good party or event, and realized that it would be fun to help plan one while incorporating public relations skills. At that very moment, I decided that in the summer of 2014, I would pursue an internship in the field of public relations.

When it came to looking for internship opportunities, there were many companies that I had researched. So, why would a girl with many opportunities in New York City head to Houston for an internship? Truth is, my boyfriend moved here from New Jersey to pursue his career in real estate. I saw this connection as an opportunity to come spend the summer in Houston and get to know the city in my own way. Besides, after I graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison next May, who knows where I’ll be headed next. One of the first companies I looked into was The PR Boutique. I browsed the website, read about their clients and their team, and ultimately decided I would apply for an internship there. They asked me to come in for an interview in November, and it must have gone pretty well because a few weeks later I was hired! After receiving this news, I decided not to apply anywhere else because I had a gut feeling that I would really enjoy my time interning at The PR Boutique. Although this is only my second week on the job, I am already loving my time here. In just three days, I have learned so much about public relations.

I have helped put together a media kit. I have learned the mechanics in writing press releases. I have done intensive research and learned how to use databases to help find journalists. I am learning to appreciate all of the work and effort that takes place behind the scenes, which is what people outside of the industry do not realize. There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into giving clients a positive image, and into creating stories that are relevant for the public and intriguing for the media. There is an extreme amount of multi-tasking that takes place on a daily basis in the public relations industry. Whether it is answering phones while doing research, driving all over the city for media drops or planning an event while in the middle of writing a press release, there is always something to be done.

So, the girl who was set on working in television may have changed her mind. I have a great background in television and still love the industry, but as I am now building up my knowledge of public relations, who knows, maybe one day I will do public relations within the television industry!
